UltraSound Scans

Ultrasound imaging is a non-invasive diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to produce images of the inside of the body. It is commonly used to evaluate various conditions related to internal organs, diagnose symptoms such as pain and swelling, and monitor the health of unborn children during pregnancy. Notably, ultrasound does not use radiation, making it a safe choice for many patients.

How Ultrasound Works

Ultrasound technology relies on the same principles as sonar. A transducer sends high-frequency sound waves into the body, which then bounce back after striking internal structures. The ultrasound machine captures these echoes to create real-time images of organs and tissues.

Acuson Sequoia - Crown Edition

We have Premium Ultrasound Units from Siemens and GE at Imaging Specialists. Siemens Sequoia – Crown Edition is an ultra-premium Ultrasound system to achieve best quality ultrasound images for General, MSK, Vascular and Obstetrics patients.

The new ACUSON Sequoia Crown Edition represents continuing to reach for the highest clinical excellence across ultrasound specialities for users and patients.

Like a crown of a tree, the ACUSON Sequoia Crown Edition branches and expands to encompass a fully featured Ultra-Premium Ultrasound system, including innovative imaging, exclusive technologies, and specialty transducers designed to improve diagnostic accuracy in nearly every clinical usage.

Types of Ultrasound

1. General Ultrasound Imaging:

  • Provides images in thin, flat sections of the body. Advances in technology allow for 3D ultrasound, producing three-dimensional images for more detailed examination.

2. Doppler Ultrasound:

  • Evaluates blood flow through arteries and veins. There are three types:
    • Colour Doppler: Visualizes the speed and direction of blood flow using colour coding.
    • Power Doppler: Offers more sensitivity, particularly for low blood flow, but does not indicate direction.
    • Spectral Doppler: Displays blood flow measurements graphically and can produce sound corresponding to blood flow.
Common Uses of Ultrasound

Ultrasound is versatile and can diagnose a wide range of conditions. It is frequently used to examine:

  • Doppler Scans - Ultrasound of blood vessels
  • Liver, gallbladder, and pancreas
  • Kidneys and bladder
  • Reproductive organs (uterus, ovaries, and foetus)
  • Thyroid and parathyroid glands
  • Brain and hips in infants
  • Musculoskeletal (MSK)
  • Ultrasound – Pregnancy
    • At 12 Weeks of pregnancy
    • Between 12-16 Weeks
    • Nuchal Scan
    • Between 12-16 Weeks
    • Between 17-22 Weeks
    • Over 22 Weeks
  • Liver – US with Fibroscan / Ultrasound Elastography

Ultrasound is also instrumental in guiding procedures like needle biopsies and assessing heart conditions.

Preparing for an Ultrasound

Preparation varies depending on the type of ultrasound:

  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing.
  • You may need to remove clothing and jewellery in the examination area.
  • Some exams require fasting (not eating or drinking) for a specific period before the procedure, while others may need a full bladder (drinking several glasses of water before the exam).
The Procedure

During an ultrasound:

  • You will lie on an exam table, typically on your back.
  • A technologist applies a water-based gel to the area of interest to enhance sound wave transmission.
  • The transducer is moved over the skin to capture images. This process is generally painless, though some pressure may be felt.
  • For certain exams, such as transesophageal echocardiograms or transrectal ultrasounds, a probe may be inserted into a body cavity.
Benefits and Risks

Benefits:

  • Non-invasive and safe with no known harmful effects.
  • Real-time imaging is useful for guiding procedures.
  • Cost-effective compared to other imaging methods.
  • Excellent for soft tissue evaluation.

Risks:

  • Minimal; standard diagnostic ultrasound poses no known risks.
Limitations

Ultrasound may be less effective in imaging areas filled with air or gas (like the lungs or intestines) and cannot penetrate bone. However, it can still detect fluid around organs or assess bone infections.
